We are sad to report the death in mid-November of Dr Robin Monro, at the age of 92.
Robin Monro was one of the pioneers of yoga therapy in the UK, and a good friend of Yogacampus. A molecular biologist by background, Robin worked alongside Nobel prize winning scientists in the study of DNA, before giving up that career to explore the use of yoga as therapy, having used yoga to cure his own asthma. He set up the Yoga Biomedical Trust (“YBT”) in 1983 in order to facilitate the development of yoga as a holistic therapy for the treatment and prevention of medical conditions, and for the cultivation of positive health, and soon afterwards established the UK’s first professional training in yoga therapy. He was known as one of the earliest pioneers in the field of yoga therapy.
When Yogacampus was founded in 2003, the Yoga Therapy Centre established by Robin and the YBT in Islington, north London, became the home for many Yogacampus trainings and workshops. Our relationship became even closer in 2006 when Yogacampus and the YBT began to collaborate more closely, and, for several years, we jointly offered accredited Yoga Therapy Diploma courses. The graduates of those courses benefitted hugely from Robin’s wisdom and humility, and many have gone on to become widely respected yoga therapists in their own right.
Robin was a gentle man, passionate about joining his scientific knowledge to the ancient traditions of yoga for the benefit of all. We are grateful for all he brought to the development of yoga therapy and know he will be missed greatly by all those who benefited from his teachings and his tireless work to expand this field of yoga.
